Where are you based? Where do you photograph the most?

Grand Junction, CO — I photograph most in the Colorado National Monument, with the National Forests, BLM, and National Parks of Western Colorado and Moab a close second.

Why did join Public Lands?

I loved finding a group of committed pros with similar affinity and protectiveness for our public lands and a group to communicate with about how to legally and sustainably work and share these lands with our clients. With more elopements and adventure sessions getting attention and being sought after in Colorado and Moab, the lands have gotten stricter on photography in these spaces. While we need to protect these spaces, the inconsistency and unfair practices some were pursuing felt daunting and the PLC felt like a light at the end of a tunnel!

Why do you think others should join PLC?

We have the privilege of working in public lands, but that privilege relies on the lands being protected and accessible. PLC works with the organizations in charge of overseeing these lands to ensure a bright future for work and recreation in these precious places. We need to encourage common sense and practical permits for photographers and couples seeking to use these spaces for sessions or elopements, so that more people are on board with using them responsibly.

What has been your experience with permits as a photographer?

My experience with permits in the past has been tedious, inconsistent, and sometimes felt impossible. PLC has worked with organizations to lobby our leaders to make common sense changes to the way permits and photographers can work in these public lands to make the process easier and more consistent for all parties involved, which has been a huge relief.

What do you want others to know about PLC?

The PLC is made up of professional photographers who also work in these public lands on a regular basis, making them relatable, understanding and assertive in helping make a difference toward a great relationship between the land stewards and professional photographers.
